Romblon Sports Legend

By Bill F. Gabay
Multi – awarded Elma Muros is considered as one of the most successful, if not the most successful student-athletes who came out of the Romblon Provincial Athletic Meet.
The Magdiwang, Sibuyan native broke into the national limelight when she scored a stunning upset victory against sprint sensation from Bulacan Lydia de Vega in the 100 meter dash event of the1981 Tacloban Palarong Pambansa.
The shocking victory caught the attention of Philippine Sports Commission officials particularly Gov. Isidro Rodriguez of Rizal. Gov Rodriguez convinced the Magdiwang lass to join the national pool in athletics, and the rest is history.
What followed next in Elma’s career is now recorded in the history books of Philippine sports. Elma’s career reached its peak when she won the gold in Asian competitions and later on was declared as “Asia’s long jump queen”.
After retiring from active competition, Elma enrolled at FEU and took up BS Physical Education. She then trained her sights on coaching and became the head coach of the UE varsity girls track and field team that included several former MIMAROPA athletes. She is currently a sports director at the Jose Rizal University. She also once worked with the PATAFA under Philip Juice.
Elma is a Lifetime Achievement Awardee of the Philippine Sportswriters Association / San Miguel Corporation.
Several years ago, Elma came to Odiongan as guest speaker in the opening ceremonies of the Romblon Provincial Athletic Meet.
She is married to track and field coach Jun Posadas.
