Teacher’s ATTITUDE: Its Impact to Student’s Success (Adaptability, Teamwork, Teachability, Inspiration, Tenacity, Understanding, Dedication, Empathy)

By: Rosafe R. Rotoni

Teachers’ work is not just about imparting knowledge; it’s an interplay of attitudes, and their mindset in shaping the essence of learning. The receptiveness to guidance, or being coachable is the key that unlocks the door to quality education delivery. According to William Arthur Ward, “The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.’ This saying encapsulates the transformative power of a teacher’s attitude, setting the stage for a journey into the heart of educational excellence.”

A positive and open attitude towards receiving feedback fosters a culture of collaboration within the educational community because teachers who embrace coachability contribute to an environment where colleagues can freely share insights and expertise, collectively striving for quality education delivery. This collaborative exchange of ideas enhances teaching practices and ensures that students receive the best possible learning experience. Being coachable therefore is a commitment to professional growth. Teachers who welcome constructive feedback and actively seek opportunities for improvement demonstrate a growth mindset not only for their students but also for themselves. It is a form of continuous learning where teachers can adapt to the ever-evolving educational landscape, and position themselves in navigating through changes successfully, thus, ultimately leading to improved education delivery.

Moreover, technical assistance from colleagues and instructional leaders often involves the introduction of new instructional strategies or approaches that cannot be neglected as it plays a significant role in the effective implementation of these strategies in the classroom. Coachability and Openness of teachers in accepting and trying new methods and a willingness to refine teaching practices based on feedback contribute to the ongoing enhancement of instructional effectiveness, more so in ensuring that education delivery remains dynamic and responsive to students’ needs. A teacher’s coachable attitude also strengthens the bonds within the professional community. Colleagues and instructional leaders appreciate working with individuals who value collaboration and view feedback as a means to collectively raise the standard of education delivery. In essence, a supportive professional community not only elevates individual teaching practices but also contributes to a positive school culture that prioritizes continuous improvement, ultimately benefiting the quality of education for all students.

As to the bottom line, “the essence of teaching lies not in the spotlight of the teacher, but in how the learner’s path to success is illuminated”. True educational excellence demands a humble yet resilient approach. The responsibility of a teacher extends beyond the dissemination of knowledge to a commitment to fostering an environment where students flourish. Teachers, in their pursuit of excellence, must not see themselves above others but rather as collaborators in the collective pursuit of student achievement because that’s the real parameter of their success. The true essence of teaching lies in the quality of attitude, it underscores the commitment to continuous improvement, collaboration, and genuine investment in student success, and that defines the lasting legacy of education.
